Protection has limits.
The Ka’Ruk safeguard scientific sites and sensitive Tear infrastructure. Their black segmented armor changes configuration with the place: open-air duty, gallery protection or a brief sealed incursion. Deep entry remains exceptional; equipment does not remove the Akkad biological limit.
The illustrations explore the equipment and material model of The Divine Forge. The underlying mechanisms follow physical principles; the world’s biology and crystalline materials belong to fiction.
The place determines the equipment.
| Environment | Configuration | Limiting condition |
|---|
| Upper level | Black armor; helmet, visor and mask available. | Heat, ash and intermittent volcanic gases. |
| Middle level | Full armor and gallery filtration where needed. | Air composition, ventilation, heat and cartridge capacity. |
| Deep level | Sealed positive-pressure suit, independent air and cooling. | Finite reserves and a planned return. |
| Recovery station | Protected air, rest, hydration and replenishment. | Removing heat and contamination from the clean space. |
Heat must go somewhere.
Radiation, contact and hot gas transfer heat into the equipment. An external reflective layer reduces part of the radiant load; insulation delays transfer. The cooling loop carries heat into a prepared thermal reserve. Once that reserve is exhausted, energy supplied to a pump cannot restore cooling by itself. A refrigeration system would also have to discharge extracted heat and its own waste heat outside the protected space.
Different radiation, different protection.
Solar ultraviolet, visible light, infrared heat and residual Tear emissions require exposure-specific protection. Optical coatings are selected by wavelength; conductive layers need suitable geometry and continuity. The Ishkar watches calibrated residual electromagnetic signals. It neither neutralizes a Tear nor functions as a universal radiation counter. Ionizing radiation from an identified source would require separate sensing and shielding; it is not assumed to explain Tears in general.
Air, drinking water and coolant are separate.
A gallery cartridge treats selected contaminants in the surrounding air. It supplies no independent breathing gas. A sealed deep-entry system carries its own compatible reserve. Drinking water has a protected circuit separate from coolant; hydrogen energy cells do not provide breathing oxygen.
The recovery room completes the system.
Rest, drinking, cooled reserves and clean replacement equipment support each return. Heat must be discharged outside the room, and contaminants kept away from clean supplies. The first exhausted resource determines withdrawal: breathing gas, thermal storage, energy, physiological tolerance or return margin.
